Chinese Vocabulary Drill with 让 (ràng) – To permit

    in Let's Talk Chinese!

Today’s word of the day is 让 (ràng) which means ‘to permit’. Let’s practice by making different words, phrases, and sentences with 让 (ràng).

让开 (ràng kāi) To step aside

The first word is 让开 (ràng kāi) which means ‘to step aside’. Let’s look at each character of this word, 让 means ‘to permit’ and 开 means ‘open’. A way of using it in a sentence is: 快让开!我没时间。(Kuài ràng kāi! Wǒ méi shíjiān.) Step aside! I don’t have time.

让座 (ràng zuò) To give up one's seat

Another word we can create with 让 (ràng) is 让座 (ràng zuò). This means ‘to give up one’s seat’. Let’s again look at each character of this word, 让 means ‘to permit’ and 座means ‘seat’. A way of using it in a sentence is 他给一位孕妇让座。(Tā gěi yī wèi yùnfù ràngzuò.) He gave up his seat to a pregnant woman.

    让步 (ràng bù) To yield

Finally, we can create the word 让步 (ràng bù) which means ‘to yield’. The 步 here means ‘step’. A way of using it in a sentence is 他们吵了起来,双方都不肯让步。(Tāmen chǎole qǐlái, shuāngfāng dōu bù kěn ràngbù.) They started to argue and both sides would not yield to each other.
