Chinese Vocabulary Drill with 免 (miǎn) – To avoid

    in Let's Talk Chinese!

Today’s word of the day is 免 (miǎn) which means ‘to avoid’. Let’s practice making different words, phrases, and sentences with 免 (miǎn).

免费 (miǎn fèi) To be free of charge

The first word is 免费 (miǎn fèi) which means ‘to be free of charge'. Let’s look at each character of this word, 免 means ‘to avoid’ and 费 means ‘fee’. A way of using it in a sentence is 这里不能免费用。(Zhèlǐ bùnéng miǎnfèi yòng.) You cannot use this place for free.

免得 (miǎn de) So as to avoid / Lest

Another word we can create with 免 (miǎn) is 免得 (miǎn de). This means ‘so as to avoid’ or ‘lest’. A way of using it in a sentence is 多穿衣服,免得感冒。(Duō chuān yīfu, miǎnde gǎnmào.) Wear more clothes, lest you catch a cold.

    难免 (nán miǎn) Inevitable

Finally, we can create the word 难免 (nán miǎn) which means ‘inevitable’. The 难 here means difficult. A way of using it in a sentence is 这种事谁都难免。(Zhè zhǒng shì shéi dōu nánmiǎn.) This type of thing can happen to anyone.
