新年 (xīn nián) New Year
The first word is 新年 (xīn nián) which means ‘new year'. Let’s look at each character of this word, 新 means new and 年 means year. You can wish your friends and family ‘Happy New Year’ by saying 新年快乐! (Xīnnián kuàilè!).
跨年 (kuà nián) New Year's Eve
Another word related to the new year is 跨年 (kuà nián). This means ‘New Year’s Eve’. Let’s again look at each character of this word, 跨 means to cross, and 年means year. So it literally means to cross into the new year. A way of using it in a sentence is 你要去哪裡跨年呢? (Nǐ yào qù nǎlǐ kuà nián ne?) Where are you going for New Year’s Eve?
身体健康 (shēntǐ jiànkāng) Healthy body
Finally, we can create the phrase 身体健康 (shēntǐ jiànkāng) which means a healthy body. We Chinese believe that health is very important and therefore you can wish anyone old or young good health in the new year by saying 祝你身体健康。(Zhù nǐ shēntǐ jiànkāng) Wishing you good health.
Today we looked at words related to the new year, these are 新年 (xīn nián) new year, 跨年 (kuà nián) new year’s eve, and 身体健康 (shēntǐ jiànkāng) a healthy body.
