The first word is 零食 (líng shí) which means ‘snack’. Let’s look at each character of this word, 零 means ‘zero’ and 食 means ‘food’. A way of using it in a sentence is: 我经常吃零食。(Wǒ jīngcháng chī língshí.) I often eat snacks.
零钱 (líng qián) Small change
Another word we can create with 零 (líng) is 零钱 (líng qián). This means ‘small change’. Let’s again look at each character of this word, 零 means zero and 钱 means money. A way of using it in a sentence is 我没有零钱。(Wǒ méiyǒu língqián.) I have no small change.
零碎 (líng suì) Spare
Finally, we can create the word 零碎 (líng suì) which means ‘spare’. The 碎 here means scattered. A way of using it in a sentence is 平常我会用等地铁零碎的时间阅读中文报纸。(Píngcháng wǒ huì yòng děng dìtiě língsuì de shíjiān yuèdú zhōngwén bàozhǐ.) I usually read Chinese newspapers during the spare time I have waiting for the subway.
