Happy New Year of the Tiger! Today, we will look at 10 new year’s greetings to do with numbers. We will start from the number 1 to the number 10.
Firstly, we mostly start new year’s greetings with the phrase 祝你 (zhù nǐ) which means ‘Wish you’.
The first new year’s greeting is 一帆风顺 (yī fān fēng shùn) which means ‘smooth sailing’.
The second one is 二龙腾飞 (èr long téng fēi) which literally means ‘two dragon soars’ symbolizing a high flying career.
The third is 三羊开泰 (sān yáng kāi tài) literally ‘three suns bringing peace and fortune’ means a surge in good luck.
The fourth is 四季平安 (sì jì píng ān) 四季 means the four seasons and 平安 safety. So it means ‘safety all year round’.
Number 5 is 五福临门 (wǔ fú lín mén) literally five blessings arrive at the door. 五福 means the five blessings, these are longevity, wealth, health, virtue, and a peaceful death. 5 areas that are said to constitute a good life. 临 means ‘to arrive’ and 门 means door.
The next one, number 6 is 六六大顺 (liù liù dà shùn). The number 6 is considered to be lucky in China because 六 sounds like 流 (liú), which means "flow" in Chinese. “六六大顺” means that ‘all will proceed smoothly’.
Number 7 七星高照 (qī xīng gāo zhào) ‘stars light your path’. It literally means the 7 stars shine brightly on you.
The eighth greeting is 八方来财 (bā fāng lái cái) means fortune coming in from all directions. 八方 means ‘the eight directions’. 来 means ‘to come’ and 财 means fortune.
Number 9 is 九九同心 (jiǔ jiǔ tóng xīn). Now the number 9 sounds like 久 (jiǔ) which means long. So 九九同心 means long-lasting harmony.
The final one is 10, 十全十美 (shí quán shí měi) which means 10 out of 10, perfect in every way.
