Today’s word of the day is 过头 (guò tóu) which means to be overdone. Let’s practice making phrases with 过头 and look at the situations you would use them in.
睡过头 (shuì guò tóu) To oversleep
The first phrase we have with 过头 (guò tóu) is 睡过头 (shuì guò tóu) which means to oversleep. So if one day you turn up at work late, and your manager asks you why you can say 我睡过头了。(Wǒ shuì guòtóule.) I overslept.
走过头 (zǒu guò tóu) To walk too far
The second phrase we have with 过头 (guò tóu) is 走过头 (zǒu guò tóu) which means to overwalk. For example, you are going to your friend’s house and you walk past it. Your friend asks you why you took so long, and you can reply by saying 我走过头了。(wǒ zǒu guò tóu le.) I walked past it.
高兴过头 (gāo xìng guò tóu) To be over excited
The final phrase we have is 高兴过头 (gāo xìng guò tóu) which means overly excited. For example, if you are going with your baby cousins or nieces and nephews to the amusement park, they may be jumping up and down in joy. You can say that他们高兴过头了。(Tāmen gāoxìng guòtóule) They are overly excited.
