The first word is 短期 (duǎn qī) which means ‘short term’. Let’s look at each character of this word, 短 means short, and 期 means term. A way of using it in a sentence is: 他只是短期外出。(Tā zhǐshì duǎnqí wàichū.) He is only going away for the short term.
短信 (duǎn xìn) Text message
Another word we can create with 短 (duǎn) is 短信 (duǎn xìn). This means ‘text message’. Let’s again look at each character of this word, 短 means short, and 信 means letter. A way of using it in a sentence is 我现在不方便讲电话，短信说吧。(Wǒ xiànzài bù fāngbiàn jiǎng diànhuà, duǎnxìn shuō ba.) It’s not convenient for me to talk right now, send a text message.
短裤 (duǎn kù) Shorts
