Today’s word of the day is 别 (bié) which means ‘separate’. Let’s practice by making different words, phrases, and sentences with 别 (bié).
别人 (bié rén) Other people
The first word is 别人 (bié rén) which means ‘other people’. Let’s look at each character of this word, 别 means separate, and 人 (rén) means people. A way of using it in a sentence is 不要和别人比。(Bùyào hé biérén bǐ.) Do not compare yourself to others.
告别 (gào bié) Farewell
Another word we can create with 别 (bié) is 告别 (gào bié). This means ‘farewell’. Let’s again look at each character of this word, 告 means ‘to say’ and 别 means separate, so it literally is the announcement of separation. A way of using it in a sentence is 我顺便到他家告别。(Wǒ shùnbiàn dào tā jiā gàobié.) I casually dropped by his house to say farewell.
个别 (gè bié) Individually
Finally, we can create the word 个别 (gè bié) which means ‘individually’. The 个 here means oneself. A way of using it in a sentence is 校长找学生们个别谈话。(Xiàozhǎng zhǎo xuéshēngmen gèbié tánhuà.) The principal talked to the students individually.
