Today’s word of the day is 本 (běn) which means root. Let’s practice by making different words, phrases, and sentences with 本 (běn).
基本 (jī běn) Basic
The first word is 基本 (jī běn) which is a noun that means basic. A way of using it in a sentence is: 我认为你的基本理论是错的。(Wǒ rènwéi nǐ de jīběn lǐlùn shì cuò de.) I think your basic theory is incorrect.
根本 (gēn běn) At all
Another word we can create with 本 (běn) is 根本 (gēn běn). This means ‘at all’. A way of using it in a sentence is 这根本没有那么坏。(Zhè gēnběn méiyǒu nàme huài.) This is not bad at all. You can say this for example when your friend is showing you something that he or she thinks is very bad but you don’t think so.
资本 (zī běn) Capital
Finally, we can create the financial term 资本 (zī běn) which means capital. The 资 here means resources. A way of using it in a sentence is 公司由于缺乏资本倒闭了。(Gōngsī yóuyú quēfá zīběn dǎobìle.) The company went bankrupt due to a lack of capital.
