    Chinese Vocabulary Drill with 断 (duàn) – To break

    Today’s word of the day is 断 (duàn) which means ‘to break’. Let’s practice making different words, phrases, and sentences with 断 (duàn).


    不断 (bú duàn) Non-stop


    The first word is 不断 (bú duàn) which means ‘non-stop’. Let’s look at each character of this word, 不 means no, and 断 means break. A way of using it in a sentence is 只要不断学习, 就会成为一个能干的人。(Zhǐyào búduàn xuéxí, jiù huì chéngwéi yīgè nénggàn de rén.) As long as you learn non-stop, you’ll become a capable person.


    判断 (pàn duàn) To judge / Judgment


    Another word we can create with 断 (duàn) is 判断 (pàn duàn). This means ‘to judge’ as a verb, or ‘judgment’ as a noun. A way of using it in a sentence is 根据我的判断,他说的是实话。(Gēnjù wǒ de pànduàn, tā shuō de shì shíhuà.) According to my judgment, he is telling the truth.


    垄断 (lǒng duàn) Monopoly


    Finally, we can create the word 垄断 (lǒng duàn) which means ‘monopoly’. A way of using it in a sentence is 这家公司垄断了整个行业。(Zhè jiā gōngsī lǒngduànle zhěnggè hángyè.) This company has monopolized the whole industry.
